Temperature Effect and Its Elimination in Geiger - Muller Tube Counters

چکیده

It has been found that in the usual form of the Geiger-Miiller tube counter the rate of counting is affected by changes of temperature. The rate of counting, at a fixed potential applied to the tube, decreases as the temperature is increased. This indicates an increase in the density of the gas in the counter. Since it is hermetically sealed this can only be caused by evaporation of volatile material within the counter. The hard-rubber insulators commonly used in these counters are practically the sole source of such volatile material, consequently a form of counter has been devised in which only glass and metal are used and which does not have its rate of counting affected by changes of temperature.

The silver activation counters are commonly used for pulsed-neutron yield measurements especially in plasma focus devices. The counter normally consists of a Geiger-Muller tube along with silver foils and polyethylene (as a moderator), which is calibrated against an Am-Be radioisotope neutron source. The neutrons, after being slowed-down in the polyethylene, activate the silver foils. By measur...

Using a gas-filled detector in a rotation modulation collimator system for near-field imaging

Rotation modulation collimators (RMC) are a class of nuclear imaging devices that are found in various applications. RMC are used for far-field applications, as in astronomy, and in near-field applications, as in environmental, medical and military uses. The typical detectors used in RMC system are scintillators and semi-conductors, which detect γ radiation only. This work investigates the util...

A New Technic for the Detection of Left-to-right Cardiac Shunts by Use of an Esophageal Geiger-mueller Tube.

THE left-to-right shunts found in small atrial or ventricular septal defects or in patent ductus arteriosus are easily demonstrated during cardiac catheterization by both rightand left-sided approaches.' Efforts to evaluate shunting due to these defects without cardiac catheterization have depended on measurements of the cardiac output curves obtained by various external counting technics.Y Bec...

The use of the Geiger - Miiller counter X - ray spectrometer in an X - ray laboratory , with special reference to automatic recording

The advantages and limitations of Geiger counter techniques in a laboratory applying X-ray methods to a variety of problems are discussed and some simple examples are described. These illustrate the convenience of its use in obtaining semi-quantitative results very rapidly and in following the effects of various treatments. The accuracy of the method is considered in relation to the statistical...

Photon doses in NPL standard neutron fields.

Standard neutron fields are invariably accompanied by a photon component due to the neutron-generating reactions and secondary neutron interactions in the surrounding environment. A set of energy-compensated Geiger-Müller (GM) tubes and electronic personal dosemeters (EPDs) have been used to measure the photon dose rates in a number of standard radionuclide and accelerator-based neutron fields....
